FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl is planning a rather unusual, impartial alliance: together with Burgenland governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ), he not only wants to put pressure on electricity price ceilings, but also ensure a reconsideration of sanctions against Russia.
The governor of Burgenland called on Monday “as an emergency measure against further increases in energy costs for a temporary price cap for energy, including fuel”. This measure should “ensure the financial survival of people in the critical autumn and winter months” and “prevent our society from drifting apart in the face of galloping inflation,” Doskozil said.
The idea is popular with the FPÖ
Doskozil could specifically imagine a temporary fuel price ceiling of 1.50 euros – his idea is especially popular with the PVV: “I invite him to take this position, even with the exorbitant prices in the field of basic food and energy and here come together with us,” the FPÖ leader said via a broadcast.
Kickl hopes to join forces
At the same time, the FPÖ chairman called on the governor of Burgenland to join hands with the PVV on the issue of sanctions: “Doskozil is only credible if he also campaigns within his own party for the sanctions policy against Russia, there will be a reconsideration. The sanctions are a cut in our own flesh and are currently the main driver for the upward price spiral,” continues Kickl.
Felbermayr: Sanctions work
The head of the Austrian economic research institute WIFO, Gabriel Felbermayr, sees the sanctions somewhat differently. Although there is currently a “huge burden” from huge price increases, the punitive measures will hit Russia much harder than Austria, according to the economic researcher.
For example, while the eurozone is counting on economic growth of around two percent this year, the Russian economy is likely to contract by eight to ten percent.
