The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has shown herself horribly by the recent Russian drone and rocket attacks on the Ukraine of the last days: they are “the most serious war crimes” and “fear against the civilian population”.
“It shows again: Russia escalates instead of negotiating,” said Merz after a meeting with the director of Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof in Berlin. The federal Chancellor spoke for a renewed tightening of the sanctions.
“Russia actually wanted to do a massacre that was only very limited, the effective Ukrainian defense is only due to the effective Ukrainian defense,” said Merz. The massive Russian attacks are “anything but a proportional answer” to the rather “very precise” Ukrainian attacks on Russian military airports.
“The recent heavy Russian attacks on Kiev and other cities are again attacking the civilian population, again the most serious war crimes,” said Merz of the attacks with hundreds of drones and marching air bodies with which Russia had overwhelmed Ukraine, especially on Monday. “No military goals, but fear against the civilian population,” the German added.
Waves in Ukrainian cities
In recent days there had been various attack waves on Ukrainian cities. According to Kiev, Russia passed the neighboring country on Monday with the biggest nocturnal drone attack since the start of the war. The Ukrainian Air Force spoke about 479 drones and 20 marching aircraft.
After Ukrainian drone attacks, Moscow had announced an answer deep in Russian territory. At the beginning of June, Russian planes was destroyed in Siberia at the beginning of June.
For NATO top in The Hague on 24 and 25 June, Merz said that the Member States of the Defense Alliance wanted to send a “sign of strength and deterrent” to Russia. “Unfortunately, it is the only language that Moscow understands in these weeks and months.”
With a view to President Donald Trump’s US government, Merz said that Europe “was a strong, reliable partner in dedication to freedom, peace and prosperity”. After his journey to the US and his meeting with Trump in Washington, he had the impression that this message will be “heard” last week.
Merz for sharpening the sanctions
Merz again spoke to sharpen the sanctions against Russia. The German federal government will continue to collaborate with its partners, said Merz. He also wanted to “contradict the impression as if the earlier sanctions had not brought anything”.
The sanctions imposed since the start of the war in February 2022 had “the Russian economy sensitive,” Merz said and added: “The question of how long Russia still holds this war depends on how strong the sanctions work.”
This is also the reason why he personally works so much for “America now also imposes sanctions,” Merz told the current initiative of Democratic and Republican senators in Washington to sharpen the punitive measures against Moscow.
The Dutch Prime Minister Schoof promised the permission of his country for sharper sanctions at the press conference with MERZ. The Netherlands would “always support further sanction packages to Russia,” he said.
Merz had previously received sheaf on the Chancellery in Berlin. The prime minister has only been in office since last week. The Dutch right -wing populist Geert Wilder had led the four -party government by Schoof on 3 June in the dispute about migration policy. Schoof wants to stay in the office until a new cabinet is formed. New elections were planned for November 29 in the Netherlands.
