Protection of the Constitution: – Germany fights with more espionage and cyber crime

Date:

According to the German constitutional protection, the attacks from home and abroad continued to increase last year. “Our country is increasingly spy and sabotage, as well as cyber attacks and disinformation,” says the preface of Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt on the report of the office for the protection of the Constitution for 2024, which was published on Tuesday.

“In particular, the Russian attack war against Ukraine demands the work of our cyber and espionage defense.” Russia does not shy away from a sabotage now. The conflict in the middle East also led to further attacks on the Constitution. Pro-Palestinian extremists attacked journalists, propagated anti-Semitism and disputed Israel’s right to exist, partly supported by left-wing extremists. On the other hand, the right turn of the AfD also grew.

The constitutional protection report for 2024 reflects the report on political crime and cyber security. Here too, considerably more attacks were recorded in connection with the Russian war war against Ukraine. The federal attorney -general, for example, has initiated a total of 17 new investigations from the Federal Court of Justice on suspicion of activities of intelligence agent. Eleven arrest statements were enforced.

Also the right extremism growing problem
Right-wing extremists also used the conflict in the Middle East to spread anti-migration anti-migration and anti-Semitic positions, says the report. The right -wing extremist potential has increased by almost a quarter – from 40,600 to 50,250 extremists. Among them are 15,300 violent right -wing extremists, in the previous year there were 14,500. A special challenge for the security authorities is perpetrators – similar to Islamist extremism – who radicalized itself. Right -wing extremist criminal and violent acts rose by almost half to almost 38,000, including nearly 1300 acts of violence.

The AfD is also included in the extremist potential of the right. After it was initially investigated by the constitutional protection, he classified the entire party in the spring of 2025 as a “secure extremist movement”. After a lawsuit by the party, the evaluation was suspended. However, the process was again feeding the debate on a ban on the AfD.
