It is a balance that shakes: last year the world experienced so many wars and armed conflicts than ever since the end of the Second World War.
In 36 countries around the world, 61 conflicts were registered last year, with different disputes that raged in different countries at the same time, such as the report published on Wednesday by the Oslo Peace Research Institute (Prio). A year earlier there were 59 conflicts in 34 countries.
“The world is much more violent and much more fragmented today than ten years ago,” said the main study author Siri Aas Rustad. The most affected continent is Africa, where last year were 28 conflicts, followed by Asia with 17, the Midden -East and the golf region with ten. According to the study there were three conflicts in Europe, two in North and South America. More than half of the countries involved had two or more conflicts within a year.
According to the study, the number of fatalities in the fighting was about the same as in 2023. Most fatalities were therefore in the Ukraine war and Gaza war, followed by fighting in the Tigray region in Ethiopia.
Appell a US
Study author Rustad warned of a lower international deployment of the United States. A policy of isolationism in the light of increasing violence around the world would be a serious mistake with long -term consequences for humanity, “she warned, referring to the” America first “policy of US President Donald Trump.
“Regardless of whether under President Trump or a future government – a deviation from global solidarity would mean that the back would be built up after 1945 with the help of the United States,” Rustad said.
