The current school tests for the nursing program will be transferred to regular schools from 2023/24. Three-year technical schools for social professions with nursing preparation already provide teaching content for nursing assistant training.
Since 2020, school trials have been running at several locations. “The school trial sites that are already running will be seamlessly transferred to the regular school system,” said Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) in a broadcast. “More new locations are also being explored to be able to train even more staff in the field of care in the future.”
Graduates from the Nursing and Welfare Colleges obtain the general higher education admissions qualification and also a diploma as a nursing assistant or alternatively as a social worker. They are in line with the higher technical colleges (HTL), the business academies (HAK), the colleges for the commercial professions (HLW) or the educational institutions for primary education (BAfEP). As with other BHS, it is possible to start a career immediately after graduation and you are also entitled to study at a university.
At the three-year technical schools, the learning content can be brought forward to further nursing courses (eg nursing assistance), and school trials are already underway for this. The content is then credited, which shortens the training. “With the implementation of these measures, we have taken an important step in the fight against the shortage of skilled nursing workers,” said Polaschek.
“The positive experiences with the existing school tests show that secondary and higher schools are an important addition to nursing training,” says Minister of Social Affairs Johannes Rauch (Groenen). The close connection with existing health and nursing courses guarantees high quality. In time, several thousand additional training places will be added.
