Former Upper Austrian SPÖ MP Rudolf Prinz died last Thursday at the age of 75 after a long illness. The trained precision mechanic spent most of his working life as a signalman for the ÖBB and was mayor of his hometown of Weißkirchen for three decades from 1979 to 2008. From 1997 to 2009 he was a member of the state parliament for the SPÖ.
Prinz rose to fame outside of Upper Austria when he suffered an acid attack on March 7, 2008. He then opened a package filled with butyric acid and sustained a superficial hand wound.
Two more packages to local politicians of the ÖVP and two to administrative employees of the community were intercepted in time by the police.
The perpetrator, who was arrested two days later, only pleaded guilty at trial, citing the motive that he wanted to give the addressee a memo for failed real estate speculation.
