The fight for world number one in US Open suffered a revolution in a few hours, in the round of 16. The reigning champion and current leader of the ATP classification, the Russian Daniel Medvedevand the candidate best placed to succeed him, the Spaniard Rafael Nadalthey had a bye in New York in the fourth round.
Medvedev suffered from the Australian’s excellent form Nick Kyrgios his executioner as in Cincinnati. It’s been a nightmare this summer for the Muscovite, who already knows he’ll give up the North American Grand Slam crown and number one.
Almost the current number one is Rafa Nadal, even after he was knocked out by the American Frances Tiafoe. He counted the previous 22 games played this year at the Grand Slam by matches won.
Nadal added points until the end of the season, though his calendar was also at the expense of new fatherhood. He withdrew from the US Open with 5,810 pointsfor Daniel Medvedev’s 5,065.
Carlos Alcaraz has 4,920, which would be 5,100, coming in second, if he beats Croatian Marin Cilic in the round of 16. Casper Ruud has 5,010, before meeting Italian Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The accounts are now very clear. Nadal will be number one if Alcaraz and Ruud do not reach the final. What will happen if both star in the final match for the title? The best will win double: trophy and No. 1.
The fifth applicant, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, fell in the opening round. And another possible candidate, the German Alexander Zverevout of the bid because he will not appear again until the Davis Cup, after suffering a serious injury in the semifinals of Roland Garros.
