Alex Palou gives his explanation

Date:

These months have been very difficult for Alex Palou. Chip Ganasi announced his automatic renewal for 2023 and the Catalan driver rejected it, announcing his move to McLaren. It was a July 12. Since then, Alex had to face the criticism of a harsh American press and fight for the title without access to remote data and with greater difficulty than his teammates. In the end, he did not keep his crown and, after a long wait, last week, the driver himself confirmed that he will stay with Chip Ganassi but he may also do a three-day test in a McLaren F1 in Barcelona, a team where he He will be a test driver for F1 in 2023. The time has come to break his silence and explain what happened and Alex did it on the portal ‘Soy Motor’, where he also writes of a column about his IndyCar career.

Palou made it clear that the initial decision to go to McLaren, even if it meant racing with them in IndyCar, was only to open the door to F1 and not deny himself that option. He assured that it was not a question of money and that in the end “everything went well” because he was sure to continue with a car to win another IndyCar title with Chip Ganassi and be in the orbit of McLaren for F1.

“There were ways to make it work, like we’ve done now,” he said. “I knew that what we are doing, there are options to make it work. That’s what we did. You never want it to be drama, the plan was for everything to be happy. I wanted it to work for me, for McLaren and for Chip (Ganassi). It’s not like that, but in the end we’re different. make it work,” he said, relieved and happy.

“It all started by winning the championship. It’s not like I’m going to knock on the door and say ‘hello, I won’, but they knocked on the door. McLaren is a team with a lot of history, it’s a big team This is part of history,” he added, clarifying that it was the Woking team that sought him out.

“When you win, everything changes and opportunities come. If you ask me if the decision was for money or for Formula 1, it was never for money. It was for the opportunity to test (an F1) and obviously not you can sit down if you haven’t tried it. Because of the opportunity it brings.”

“I always say that Formula 1 is not my goal and this is the truth, because it is not. My goal is to reach the maximum with the resources and abilities that I have and that goal is to reach IndyCar. When I arrived , The goal was no longer to be part of it, but to win. And we achieved it. And at the moment of winning IndyCar, there the doors open a little or you look at them, “he admitted.

“It is quite trying. We have shown in the United States that we are very fast. Why not try it in Formula 1? Doing the test does not mean that we will go there in the room, but it means that doing the test is more well nothing and I wanted to try Formula 1 at some point in my life and now I have achieved it,” said the 2021 IndyCar champion, who was happy to resolve what at first seemed like a difficult legal mess. to resolve: ” It’s a risk, as you saw, but there are times when you have to make decisions. You have to make them and this is the right time. I’m glad it went well, because it could have gone wrong. As I say, I’m glad it went well and here we are”.
