1,300 runners take part in the Volcano UltraMarathon, the main draw being the presence of Zaid Ait Malek and Chema Martínez
Cartagena’s great trail party this fall kicks off today in Cabo de Palos. The Jimbee Volcano UltraMarathon, known as ‘The Conquest of Quart Hadast’, kicks off its ambitious inaugural run at 7pm. At that moment, the rock-hard Ultra begins, with a total distance of 112 kilometers and a positive drop of 2660 meters. The organization considers it the queens event and plans to make it a national reference in the coming years, hosting national championships from this distance.
Your departure will be in Cabo de Palos. From there it goes through the towns of Playa Paraíso, Playa Honda and Mar de Cristal, then goes to Portmán and arrives in Cartagena after passing Mount Calvario. Later they will have to do an intensive tour through the western part of the municipality, with visits to Tallante, Isla Plana or La Azohía before starting the last part with the climbs to Castillitos and Monte Roldán, which pass through El Portús.
The test will conclude at the Palacio de los Deportes de Cartagena. The first runners, including favorite Zaid Ait Malek, the main attraction of the race, are expected around 9am on Saturday. The closing of the finish line is at ten o’clock in the evening, twenty-seven hours after the start. 280 runners participate.
Saturday morning at seven o’clock, the 300 runners who are preparing for the 66 kilometers that the marathon will cover, will start their challenge. It will have the same start and finish, but the total height difference will be smaller: 1460 meters. Two other distances, less demanding, but not without effort, will decorate the intense weekend of trail running. They will take place on Sunday morning and will not depart from Cabo de Palos, but from the Palacio de los Deportes de Cartagena, where they will also end. The 34-kilometer race will deliver a positive 900-meter vertical drop. The runners have a total of nine hours to conquer the climbs to Monte Calvario, San Julián, Atalaya and Monte Roldán, on a day that is expected to be hot.
Finally, the distance classified as ‘promo’ will be a total of ten kilometers. Chema Martínez, gold medalist in the 10,000-meter sprint at the European Championships in 2002. The former Olympic athlete and runner in up to seven world championships, along with 400 other athletes, will compete in a race with an altitude difference of 220 meters, he will reach the top of the Watchtower and overcome the climb to Tentegorra.
