On December 24, 1989, the magazine ‘France Football’, which annually awards the prestigious Ballon d’Or, honorably awarded a trophy that has never been created again: the Super Ballon d’Or. The prize was awarded to the Argentine legend of Real Madrid Alfredo DiStefano.
The Super Ballon d’Or is a special award for the best player in Europe in the last three decades and the striker won it by finishing in the votes (conducted by the magazine itself and its readers as well as former Ballon d’Or winner ), ahead of three other candidates: Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Franz Beckenbauer, Kevin Keegan and Karl-Heinze Rummenigge.
Behind Di Stefano, on the podium, are former Dutch Barça footballer Johan Cruyff (2nd) and French Juventus player Michel Platini (3rd). The Germans Beckenbauer and Rummenigge and the Englishman Keegan also appeared. ‘France Football’ has only awarded this award once, so ‘Saeta Rubia’ is the only footballer with this recognition.
Di Stefano led Real Madrid to win the first five consecutive European Cups (1956 to 1960). During his time as a footballer, the Argentine striker won the Ballon d’Or in the 1957 and 1959 editions. Cruff did it three times (1971, 73 and 74) and Platini three more (1971, 73 and 74).
