Rob Page, Wales manager, stated on Tuesday that Gareth Bale could do some work in the Welsh team after retiring as an active player. Bale announced on Monday that, at the age of 33, he is calling an end to his career. The former madridista, winner of 5 Champions Leagues, is Wales’ all-time leading scorer and the most capped player in that team.
Page told the media via Zoom: “When you’ve got someone like Gareth Bale, with what he’s done for Wales and the impact that it can have in the dressing room… I have taken advantage of it and he (Bale) is interested to carry out some work, sure, some have already been discussed”.
The Wales coach explained that he would speak to Bale in a few weeks, “which I’m passionate about, because I want him to be linked to the national team.” Rob Page revealed that Bale told him on Sunday (a day before the official announcement via social media) that he was hanging up his boots.
Page also told the media: “(Bale) told me that he was going to retire from football completely, which was a surprise to me, I didn’t expect that to be the reason for calling me on the phone. But I completely understand his decision. His career has been phenomenal. He put Wales on the map for what he has done in European football with Real Madrid, in the Premier League with Tottenham and finally with the national team in the World Cup”.
Gareth Bale helped Wales qualify for their first World Cup in 64 years, in Qatar 2022. The former Real Madrid player has been key in the 2016 and 2020 Euro Cups. “He will be missed, not the news we want to start with years, but we all know this moment will come someday.
