He Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) announced this Wednesday that it will conduct a preliminary study to study Stockholm’s candidacy for Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2030after his unsuccessful candidacies for 2022 and 2026.
The initiative comes from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which last year postponed the decision on the venue.
“As a first step, we had a meeting with the IOC, which tried to make sure that, without any kind of commitments, we see the possibility of 2030. In the meeting it became clear that the IOC liked our concept for 2026. What The what the study should answer is whether we are ready to move forward in the process,” SOK interim president Anders Larsson said in a statement.
Larsson pointed out that Sweden already has all the necessary facilities to host the Games.
“We have learned a lot from the 2026 bid. We have had preliminary contacts with Swedish politicians and Swedish companies even before starting the study,” the statement said.
According to the plan announced today, a partial report on the study will be presented on April 20.
Stockholm had already sought to organize the 2022 Games, but the local government’s decision not to give it support due to uncertainty about funding scuttled the project.
The Swedish capital made a new attempt a few years later, but, although it received political support, the IOC chose another finalist, Milan.
The choice of venue for the 2030 Games will not be decided at the next IOC Session, this year, As planned. The challenges posed by climate change and the sustainability of the Winter Games led the body to postpone the decision, as announced last December.
The three cities initially interested in organizing this edition, Sapporo (Japan), Salt Lake City (USA) and Vancouver (Canada), have been informed about it.
Sapporo later announced it had “slowed down” its bid, concerned about corruption scandals related to Tokyo 2020.
