Shocking AZ Alkmaar are shaky and temporary leaders

With a resounding win set in the first half, AZ Alkmaar ended a two-game losing streak to thrash Excelsior (5-0) at the AFAS Stadion and take a temporary lead at the top of the Eredivisie.

Pascal Jansen’s side closed out the game before the break with a devastating 5-0 victory thanks to a brace from 22-year-old Sven Mijnans and goals from Sweden’s Jesper Karlsson, Denmark’s Jens Odgaard and Vangelis Pavlidis of Greece.

The match then lacked history. Excelsior, fourteenth, four points from the playoffs due to being permanently marked by Emmen, accepted their defeat and began to think about future commitments.

Victory in the match that opened the twenty-first day left AZ in the lead at the expense of Feyenoord, who visit Heerenveen on Sunday and remain a point behind. Third, four behind the head, is Ajax, which receives Waalwijk and fourth, PSV Eindhoven, five, which awaits Groningen.
