Eight health workers will go on trial for the death of Diego Armando Maradona after being charged with “negligent homicide,” Argentine media reported Wednesday. The soccer star, who led Argentina to its second world title in 1986, died at the age of 60 in November 2020 of heart failure after undergoing brain surgery a few days earlier.
A court in San Isidro, a town outside Buenos Aires, rejected defense appeals to charge lesser charges and confirmed a year-old indictment by the Prosecutor’s Office for careless and inefficient work in treatment of former soccer players. Boca Juniors and Napoli, TN television channel reported. The trial is unlikely to begin until next year and the defendants could face prison terms of between eight and 25 years, according to reports.
