They started the final day third in the standings, three shots behind the leaders. And in the middle of the round, nobody counted them as candidates for victory. But a five-birdie finish in the final eight holes at TPC Louisiana propelled Americans Davis Riley and Nick Hardy (-30) to victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Aged 26 and 27, respectively, and with similar careers on the PGA Tour, Riley and Hardy hit it off to earn their first American tour victory, securing playing rights for the next two years, achieve the record for the tournament (258 hits), place in the top 40 of the FedEx Cup and pocket a check for $1,242,7000 each.
“We’ve been great friends since we were 14 years old, so to win our first PGA Tour tournament together is a dream come true. I’m more nervous than ever, to be able to share this moment with Davis is incredible – believe,” Hardy said. They have never played a professional tournament together and until three weeks ago they didn’t dare to play together in New Orleans.
