Aulas left Lyon in the hands of John Textor

“At its meeting held on May 5, the Board of Directors of OL Groupe appointed John Textor as Chairman of the Board of Directors (…) following the removal of Mr. Jean-Michel Aulas as Chairman and CEO of OL Groupe”, the club said in a statement.

“Mr. Textor has also been appointed as general manager of OL Groupe from May 5 for a temporary period, the moment to identify and appoint a new general manager”, Lyon added, specifying that Aulas was “appointed honorary president”. Aulas, 74, will remain chief executive on a three-year deal after the club is taken over.

However, disagreements quickly appeared on the sports policy that would follow the team of the ambitious American investor, who was already present in the capital of Crystal Palace (England) and Botafogo (Brazil).

He revived the team when he arrived in 1987

Jean-Michel Aulas took control of Olympique Lyonnais in June 1987 as the team languished in the 2nd division for four years. With him at the helm, OL regained the European Cup and won seven consecutive French championship titles from 2002 to 2008, winning the Coupe de la Ligue in 2001 and the Coupe de France in 2008 and 2012. The title was also the last won by Lyon .

Under Aulas’ mandate, a women’s group was also created. In total, OL won more than fifty titles with Aulas under his management, helping Lyon become a stronghold of European football.
