Patrol led – General who arrested Che Guevara died

Date:

The general responsible for the arrest of legendary revolutionary hero Ernesto “Che” Guevara in the 1960s has passed away in Bolivia. Gary Prado Salmón passed away on Saturday at the age of 84, surrounded by family, his son announced on Facebook.

Born in Argentina, Guevara had traveled Latin America as a young man before joining the Cuban revolutionaries under Fidel Castro. After the triumph of the 1959 revolution in Cuba, Guevara took Cuban citizenship. In 1965, Guevara resigned from all his offices in Cuba; he later rallied supporters for an uprising in Bolivia.

Patrol directed to capture Guevara
Salmón commanded the patrol that captured Guevara in southwestern Bolivia on October 8, 1967. A day later, the 39-year-old revolutionary was shot dead by a non-commissioned officer without trial and despite Bolivia’s ban on the death penalty. The soldier acted on direct instructions from the then president of Bolivia.

The Bolivian Congress had awarded Prado Salmón national hero status for his role in Guevara’s arrest. He also later served as a minister in David Padilla’s government and later served as Bolivian ambassador to Britain and Mexico. Prado Salmón has been paralyzed since he was hit in the back by a bullet in an accident in 1981.
