The boxer of the Ukrainian national team Oleksandr Onyshchenko was killed in combat near the town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, where he was fighting with his country’s army against Russian forces, the Ukrainian Boxing Federation announced on Wednesday.
“Olexandr died near Bakhmut defending the Ukrainian homeland from the Russian enemy,” the Federation announced in a statement posted on its Facebook page. The Federation expressed “its heartfelt condolences to the family.”
Onyshchenko he was junior champion of Ukraine and won several tournaments played in his country, such as Carpathian Cup, Kuzhelny Cup and Arsyonov Cup.
“Eternal memory to all those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and independence of our country,” the Ukrainian Boxing Federation said in a statement.
According to data from the Ukrainian Ministry of Sports, more than 260 athletes died in Ukraine as a result of the war caused by the Russian invasion. Most of them volunteered in the army to fight the Russian forces.
