The former German goalkeeper jorg schmadtke (59) is now the new sports director of Liverpool, as announced by the ‘red’ club on Tuesday. Schmadtke arrives after more than four years in the same role at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, which he left at the start of 2023.
The former goalkeeper has previously enjoyed successful seasons in similar positions at Cologne, Hannover and Alemannia Aachen. Schmadtke represented Fortuna Dusseldorf, Freiburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach throughout his playing career, before retiring in 1998 after playing nearly 300 games in the Bundesliga.
The German will take up his new role on June 1, replacing Julian Ward as sporting director, who will step down this summer after more than a decade at the club.
