The German Alexander Zverevtenth in the ATP ranking, was proclaimed this Tuesday the champion of Chengdu Tennis Open (China), after defeating the Russians in the final Roman Safiullin (55) of 6-7(2), 7-6(5) and 6-3in a nearly three-hour meeting.
The match reflected the qualities and resilience of both tennis players and ended in a bold victory for the German, against Safiullin’s debut in a final on the professional circuit.
Zverev, who has hopes of once again becoming one of the major names in the ATP, maintained firm control and took an early advantage in the first set. There was a flurry of service victories that led to the tie-break, which closed clear 7-2 in favor of the Russian.
In the second set, Safiullin’s five service losses gave Zverev hope, closing the tiebreaker game 7-5 in his favor.
In the decisive match, the German was better on his serve and sealed his victory, adding a new title to his record.
