Two famous journalists from the Netherlands, Mike Verweij and Valentijn Driessen, believe that Ronald Koeman the decision must be ‘passed’ Luuk de Jong, who announced this spring that he was retiring from international football, and called him to rejoin the Oranje. This is what they said following the injury to Memphis Depay, which makes an experienced striker necessary.
“For the good of Dutch football, I must call him,” Driessen said on the ‘De Telegraaf’ podcast. “Now he’s at a stage in his career where everything is working, but that’s also because of everything he’s been through. He (Luuk) has really been able to play the best football at times, even if sometimes it seems like he’s clumsy and strict. As national team coach Luuk de Jong will be called and asked if he wants to come back.
Verweij pointed more directly at Oranje’s sporting director Niegel de Jong: “For sure Koeman won’t call him. He sees that as a kind of shame and I understand it. Luuk de Jong for his part thinks: ‘if they need me they will. call me’ . So we find ourselves at a dead end. Nigel de Jong is there to serve the interest of Dutch football. Maybe he should tell Luuk ‘come if when you want’. And to Koeman: ‘Can you use him? Ask Luuk if he wants to come back.’ for two or three games. Nigel de Jong should take the initiative.”
