The Bulgarian Football Union (BFS) announced today. the dismissal of Serbian Mladen Krstajic at the head of the senior men’s team because of “their unsatisfactory results” in the qualifying matches for Euro 2024.
“His contract, which expires in 2024, has come to an end,” the BFS said in a press release.
Bulgaria lost (0-2) against Lithuania on October 14 in the qualifying phase for Euro 2024 and three days later by the same score against Albania in a friendly match played in Tirana.
Two negative results in one month relegated the Bulgarian team from 78th to 84th place in the FIFA ranking. Besides, occupies last place in qualifying group G for Euro 2024, with only two points added in six games and not mathematically likely to qualify for the final stage in Germany.
One year and three months in office
Bulgaria’s second foreign coach after German Lothar Matthäus (2010-2011) and former Serbia international, 49, Krstajic promised by appointment in July 2022 “do everything possible to strengthen the team” emphasizing that he has no “magic wand.”
The next coach is Bulgarian and his name will be announced on November 1, according to BFS technical director Ivan Ivanov.
