Spanish American champions Villacampa are challenging Chivas for a place in the final

Date:

The champions American eagles of Spanish coach Ángel Villacampa will visit Chivas del Guadalajara this Thursday in the first leg of the semifinals of the Apertura 2023 tournament of the Mexican women’s soccer league.

The Águilas and Chivasthe two most popular teams in Mexico, are looking for their third crown and will star in the league derby in the stage of the four best teams.

Last June, America won the second league title in its history by beating Tuzas del Pachuca with Spanish midfielder Jennifer Hermoso and, six months later, it maintained its winning momentum thanks to Villacampa.

With 42 points, Águilas was the second best team in the regular season of the Apertura and in the quarterfinals they once again defeated Tuzas, whom they now crushed 9-2 to enter the semifinals.

In the regular phase, Villacampa’s team was the best attack, with 65 goals in favor, something they validated again in the last round, where they were the highest scoring team with more more than Rayadas del Monterrey, whom they eliminated in the quarterfinals 8-4 against Tijuana.

Katty Martínez was América’s leading scorer in the quarterfinals with four goals, as was Alicia Cervantes, from Guadalajara. Now they will be the offensive spark plugs for their teams in the semifinal.

Led by Cervantes and Argentine strategist Antonio Spinelli, Chivas are aiming for the third title in their history, the first since Clausura 2022, surpassing América and Rayadas and becoming alone as the second highest title winners in league

Guadalajara, Águilas and Monterrey share second place with the most league trophies in their cabinet with two, three and equal Tigres UANL, five-time champions.

Spinelli’s team finished in third place in the regular season of the Apertura 2023, with the third best offense in the championship, with 43 goals, and the best defense, allowing only 11 goals, the same amount as Tigres .

In the quarterfinals, Chivas kicked Toluca out of the tournament, beating them 5-1, confirming them as the championship’s best defense.

The first leg will be played at Chivas’ Akron Stadium and the second leg is this Sunday at Azteca, home of América.

The other semifinal series, between Rayadas de Monterrey and Tigres UANL of Spanish coach Milagros Martínez, starts this Friday at BBVA Stadium in Monterrey and ends on Monday at Universitario, home of the cats.
