Wandsworth Borough Council’s seven members unanimously rejected plans to build 39 new runways at Wimbledon Park, south-west London. In doing so, they followed the recommendations of their planning officers.
Last month, Councilors in nearby Merton, where most of the proposed land is located, approved the project. It is now up to the City of London Council to decide whether or not to build the new site, which is strongly opposed by some local residents.
“We are of course disappointed by the decision of the London Borough of Wandsworth“, commented in a statement the executive director of the All England Club, Sally Bolton, who assured that the project will bring “hundreds of jobs and tens of millions of pounds of economic benefits to our neighbors in Wandsworth, Merton and across London. “
The project also includes the construction of a track with a capacity for 8,000 spectators. on land formerly occupied by a golf course. This extension will allow the qualifying round for Wimbledon, currently held in Roehampton, more than 5 km away, to be held at the same location as the tournament itself, as is the case with the other three Grand Slam events.
