Stefanos Ntouskos, Greek Olympic rowing champion at the Tokyo Olympics, will be the first torchbearer with the Olympic flame for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Hellenic Olympic Committee announced this Wednesday.
Ntouskos will be in charge of lighting the torch on April 16 in ancient Olympia and that will be the start of the flame’s journey in Greece, where up to 600 relays will be carried out over a total of 5,000 kilometers, from Meteora to Kastellorizo and from Delphi to Santorini . That journey will end at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on April 26, 2024, with the players of the national water polo team, Olympic runners-up in Tokyo 2021, as the main protagonists of those final relays.
The fire will leave Piraeus to reach Marseille by the famous three-masted historical monument, Belem. It will arrive in France on May 8, just over two and a half months before the Paris Olympic Games begin on July 26.
“Greece and France are united by strong ties of cooperation and solidarity. Paris will host a magnificent Olympic Games and showcase the greatness of the French,” said Spyros Capralos, president of the COH.
After lighting Olympia and its journey through Greece, the Olympic flame will head to France aboard the Belem, a majestic three-masted ship that will cross the Mediterranean from Athens to Marseille. The Olympic Torch Relay will pass through different regions of France, from the mainland to the overseas departments and territories, offering everyone the chance to see the torch.
In total, it is estimated that 10,000 people will carry the Olympic torch to Paris. The complete torch relay route will be announced on June 23.
