Williams has extended its contract with Mercedes until 2030

Date:

The team Williams Formula One will continue to use Mercedes engines until at least 2030, as both parties announced on Monday.

The extension means Mercedes now has long-term engine contracts with three of the competition’s 10 teams, including its own factory team for which seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and compatriot George Russell drive . McLaren announced a similar deal in November.

Williams has been powered by Mercedes engines since 2014 and its director, James Vowles, is a former strategy director at Mercedes, having joined the Brackley-based team a year ago.

“We have enjoyed a long-term partnership with Mercedes-Benz and we are delighted to extend this partnership into the next season of Formula One,” said Vowles.

“The experience, support and technology that Mercedes brings is perfectly aligned with our team’s medium and long-term aspirations.

“The long-term agreement with Mercedes is a positive step and part of our goals for the future, as we will maintain our design and manufacturing expertise and capabilities in-house.”

Williams finished last season seventh overall, a big improvement from 10th in 2022. They will have the same driver line-up of Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant in 2024.

Together they enter the new era

The new F1 engine regulations that will come into effect from 2026 will retain, albeit with changes, turbohybrid power units. They will have a greater contribution of electrical energy, with an approximate 50/50 distribution between the batteries and the combustion engine. In addition, Formula 1 will switch to fully sustainable fuels as part of its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint to 0 from 2030.
