Alonso gives the reasons for his renewal: “My love for F1 has not changed”

Date:

There has been much speculation surrounding the figure of Fernando Alonso but we already know what its future is. The Asturian decided to renew with Aston Martin with a multi-year contract which links it to 2026, the year of major changes in regulations, in Formula 1.

After the agreement, the team called the media for a press conference where the Spaniard explained how the negotiations went and when he decided to move on.

“It’s been easy. I think it hasn’t changed since we talked in February at the car launching. I needed some races to really think about if I was prepared to commit a few more years, because the calendars are a bit more intense. My love for Formula 1 and Aston Martin has not changed“, said.

“I want to talk to myself and make a decision. Formula 1 takes all your time, all your energy and you have to sacrifice everything to keep the race and I want to see if I’m ready to do it. When I made the decision, I thought“So after Australia, I sat down with Aston Martin, as I said in February, that they will be my priority and it’s not too difficult.”

The Spaniard admitted he was in talks with other teams saying “you listen to all teams, which is normal procedure“However, he reiterated that Aston Martin’s desire to work with him has been very easy.

“When both parties are interested, at some point you agree and I am excited to continue the race with this team, I feel at home. We started together a year and a half ago and we have achieved many things together, some of them have never been in Formula 1, so many highs in such a short time, I feel this is the beginning of this path, it is not the end for me at Aston Martin.”

The change in Honda regulations

Alonso also admitted that he wanted a contract that was not just one year and ended up signing the longest of his career. This indicates that it is in the major regulatory changes of 2026, when Honda joined the Silverstone project as a motorist. Despite the bad memories of the Japanese and Spanish pairing at McLaren, Fernando is eager for their paths to cross again.

“I won’t lie, one seems small to me and is on the table from the first moment, entering the new regulations in 2026with Honda and the new factory fully operational, part of this decision is for all of this, the great sponsor Aramco, one of the largest in the world, many factors have made 2026 an attractive project to follow, This is a life project. This is the longest I’ve signed in my career. Let’s see how many years older I am or in what role because I will have 40 years of experience in motorsport and it is very motivating.

“It’s a great constructor, a great motosport company, it didn’t work at McLaren a few years ago butnow they clearly dominate the sport, so their base for 2026 will be strongthey have the perfect factory to achieve this, I know them and I know Sakura and they will be the motivation of the whole project, sustainable gasoline from 2026 and it’s win-win, I respect the Japanese culture, there are many links with them from 2026, I hope let’s now have the chance to work together again after Indy and McLaren because it will be fun.
