The FIFA announced this Monday the official launch of the world futsal classification, which was led by Brazil in both men’s and women’s categories, with Spain in third place in the first and in second position in the second.
The Brazilian men’s team has won five of the nine editions of the World Cup and missed the podium just once, leading the table followed by Portugal, this year’s defending champion in Uzbekistan and winner of the last two European championships.
Spain, two-time champion in 2000 and 2004 and seven-time European champion, is in third place.
In the women’s category, Brazil also leads, having won the seven South American championships it has contested, with Spain, three-time European champions, in second place and Portugal – who have lost two continental finals to Spain – third .
FIFA noted that due to the “exponential growth in recent years” of futsal, the creation of its world ranking “represents the next logical step, in addition to being the first time that the FIFA rankings are launched at the same time .” .”
The organization recalled that the television broadcasts of the Lithuania 2021 World Cup attracted an average of 2.42 million viewers per match, representing a significant increase of 130% compared to the previous edition of Colombia 2016, figures that it expects to increase in Uzbekistan 2024 and the following year in the women’s event, the first in history.
The preliminary classification created by FIFA is based on statistics compiled from more than 4,600 international matches and the system will also serve to determine the teams that will star in all future editions of the World Cup , where the draw for the World Cup will be held on the 26th of Uzbekistan 2024 in the city of Samarkand.
