Alejandro Mendoza Crespo, a Bolivian tennis player who reached world number 741 in 2016, has been suspended for life and fined $250,000 (230,000 euros) for corruption and match-fixing, the International Agency for Tennis Integrity reported on Friday (ITIA, for its acronym in English).
Mendoza Crespo, 34, received the maximum penalty for 20 offenses against the ITIA anti-corruption code, which resulted in a lifetime suspension and a $250,000 fine.
According to the judge, Mendoza was involved in a “continuous pattern of corruption between 2016 and 2018, including the initiation of offenses by encouraging other players to fix the outcome of matches for financial gain. “
Jorge Panta Herreros, a 28-year-old Peruvian tennis player who was ranked number 447 in the world in 2022, received a three-year suspension and a fine of $10,000, after committing four offences, including rigging the results of two in his battles. . Panta Herreros’ suspension will end on April 3, 2007.
These sanctions are related to a criminal case involving a bet-fixing organization in Belgium and resulted in the imprisonment of the leader, Grigor Sargsyan, for five years. Five more tennis players were sanctioned in 2023 for this same investigation.
During their suspension, Mendoza and Panta will not be able to participate, train or attend any tennis matches organized by ITIA members (ATP, ITF, WTA) and the federations of France, the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States, as well as other national associations.
