Gran Canaria could host even the quarterfinal matches of the 2030 World Cup

Date:

The Sports Councilor of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Aridany Romero, launched this Tuesday a message of caution and do not get too excited about the island’s candidacy to host the matches of the 2030 FIFA World Championship in the capital of Las Palmas. But it also sent to Canarian society a message of trust and of fulfilling the objectives before the RFEF honestly and correctly.

Romero, who expressed his department’s confidence about the bidding schedule for the reform of the Gran Canaria Stadium, told ‘El Espejo Canario’ that with the expected investment of 110 million euros can be played on the island until the quarterfinal matches. He added that in eight months all the documentation should be delivered and before the end of 2025 the expansions of the Gran Canaria Stadium will begin to be carried out.

The possibility of hosting quarterfinal matches is due to the fact that in 2030 48 teams will participate in the World Cup and many more matches, so he considers it reasonable that Gran Canaria exceeded the match predictions that people initially believed. He added that the mild summer climate of the Las Palmas capital would encourage many teams to play in Gran Canaria against the high continental temperatures.

Romero added that the the island exceeds 109 indicators which the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) requested to be one of the venues for the World Cup jointly organized by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

He pointed out that “the ideal” for the RFEF to follow preliminary plan of 11 venues for FIFA Don’t go to some cities in November in favor of others and blow up Las Palmas, the capital. Romero said he understands there are cities asking to expand the list of venues. In his opinion, it would be prudent to keep the initial plan in case FIFA decides to apply major changes to the candidature.

This week, Romero referred to Acfi Press the decision-making process of the Higher Sports Council (CSD) and the RFEF so that the 2030 World Cup candidacy of Spain, Portugal and Morocco has more than eleven places on Spanish territory .

The CSD, represented by its cabinet director, Juan María Fernández Carnicer, and the Royal Spanish Football Federation, with a work team represented by Fernando Sanz, María Tato, Jorge Mowinckel and Chema Timón, defended before FIFA that Spain has more than eleven places in the World Cupaccording to federative sources who informed EFE, to respect the twelve candidates who have already submitted documentation.

This includes Valencia, which on Friday confirmed the Nou Mestalla as the venue and its willingness to accept the FIFA conditions to continue to immerse in the process of hosting the 2030 World Cup.

The RFEF reported last Friday that the meeting in Agadir of the Joint Committee of the Morocco-Portugal-Spain candidacy had the “main purpose” of holding a work meeting and inspection of the premises for “finalize the details of the joint candidacy before its final presentation, at the end of July“.

The meeting ended without, after the debates held, the tripartite committee being able to make “final decisions about the number of stadiums, their geographical distribution or the allocation of matches to each country.”

In a virtual meeting with FIFA representatives, “focused on the candidacy process and development”, reviews of “various aspects”, as well as “adjustments to the joint candidacy dossier.” The Spanish federation highlights “the eExcellent collaboration established between all parties involved“.

The official candidacy dossier must be submitted to FIFA by July 31and until that date definite agreement will be sought for distribution of headquarters between the three countrieswith the intention of Spain to have twelve headquarters, without the approval of Morocco, which would have six, and Portugal, which would have three.
