Historic breakthrough for the Spanish women’s team

The Federation equates the percentages of bonuses and image rights between men and women for the European Championship, but the economic differences are still huge

The Spanish women’s football team is slightly closer to the superpowers. At least with regard to the conditions of the players with regard to premiums, travel and image rights, under which Spain will face the European Championship in England in July next year.

The Spanish Football Federation (FEF) on Tuesday presented an agreement for the next five years – a cycle that includes the next two European Championships and World Cups, in addition to the Paris ’24 Olympics in case of qualification – for which it is equal to the percentage of premiums based on sponsorship and awards received by the men’s and women’s soccer teams.

This does not mean that women and men will receive the same amounts, as they will continue to depend on the global income of each group, but it is an important step that puts Spain on a step where the major world powers in women’s football, such as Norway , Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

Precisely the American women’s team, current world champions, is the only one who, in addition to this equalization of conditions, divides the total amount of income from sponsorship, prizes, television rights and ticket sales equally between the men’s and women’s team in the World Cups, something that is unprecedented in world sport.

“It is a historic day and we would like to share it with everyone. I would like to thank President Luis Rubiales for his interest in signing this agreement. This strengthens the FEF’s involvement with the players and the Spanish women’s team,” appreciated Irene Paredes, captain of the Spanish national team, in the signing of the agreement, along with the FEF president and her teammates Alexia Putellas and Patricia Guijarro .

This milestone regarding the conditions of the Spanish internationals was the good news of a day that left behind another very bad day: the injury of Jenni Hermoso. The Barca striker drops out of the European Championship in England due to a grade two sprain of the internal lateral ligament of the right knee, leaving coach Jorge Vilda without his best option at the tip of the Spanish attack.
