In the first heat, the current world ranking leader had no intention of giving up on his rival. Goffin, number 39 in the ATP rankings, reacted late, going 5-3 on the scoreboard and complicating the final game for the Russian. However, Medvedev took the set in 35 minutes, with as many as two set points.
The Belgian, far surpassed by the Muscovite, did not return from the fight. Medvedev won and sealed his pass in the round of 16 in the second set. Goffin tried to reverse the result, taking up to three games to break point, where the Russian got it all.
In this way, the Moscow surpassed his performance in Halle last year, where he fell in the first round against Jan Lennard Struff. Medvedev advanced to the next round, to face Ilya Ivashka tomorrow in the round of 16which he played for and won at Hertogensbosch ATP, in the quarterfinals.
