Max Verstappen is in a very difficult situation ahead of this Sunday’s race at Brazilian F1 GP. The Dutch driver was handicapped by a red flag at the end of Q2 which prevented him from finishing his lap, which saw him relegated to the 12th best time. This, along with his 5 place grid penalty, left him in 17th position, although he will start 16th due to the late loss of Alex Albonno time to fix his car.
The Dutchman got out of the car with angry gestures and went to talk to the television stations without understanding the actions of the FIA stewards. According to Max, the FIA took too long to show a red flag that was clear and needed to be shown previously, without leaving time for the cars along the circuit to complete their fast laps, something he was unable to do.
“You know, honestly, I’ll let it go. It’s so stupid anyway to talk about it, it’s ridiculous…”he declared to ‘Sky Sports’, furious and having to bite his tongue to avoid sanction.
“The timing of the red flag was incredible. It was like they were having coffee and in 30 or 40 seconds they thought: ‘we have to raise the red flag’, when the car was clearly damaged,” he noted on ‘DAZN’ , very angry.
“Obviously, the cars in front of me finished their lap and we suffered a double penalty”he added.
“You want to do three laps because the tires improve every lap, but obviously we’re in the last pit lane garage so you’re always behind.. But for me the problem was the red flag and the fact that they waited 30 or 40 seconds,” then Verstappen, who had to start from afar with his main rival for the title, Lando Norris, on pole.
Of course, we will see if the race can be held, as rain is expected and visibility may be very low.
