Elegant and aggressive silhouette

Honda’s ‘Neo Sports Café’ flagship, the 2023 CB1000R, highlights the unique engine proposition it represents

Motorcycling has seen many changes over the past decade in riders’ expectations of their bikes (how they ride, how they look and how they make you feel). And Honda has never been afraid to apply its technology, engineering and imagination to create motorcycles that occupy new spaces in the market.

The CB1000R is one of those motorcycles. Introduced via a 2018 model change, Honda’s development engineers reassessed the previous model’s ‘streetfighter’ underpinnings and, guided by retro-industrial minimalism, stripped it down again.

Born under the ‘Neo Sports Café’ banner, the resulting machine was a new fusion of sports naked and Café Racer inspiration.

The lines of the CB1000R are aggressive, with details such as the exposed aluminum subframe, radiator shrouds and airbox covers flowing in dynamic harmony throughout. The headlight also tilts back, while intricately crafted wheels add to the expert engineering on display.

Honda’s ‘Neo Sports Café’ design aesthetic was created not only with a longing for the past, but also with an eye to the future, with plenty of room for variations on the concept.

From nose to tail, the CB1000R flows harmoniously: the instantly recognizable round headlight sits in a teardrop-shaped frame and slopes back between the forks; the brushed aluminum radiator grilles are very compact and rotated in the direction of travel, a design detail that is also reflected in the airbox covers.

The CB1000R’s 998cc DOHC four-cylinder engine delivers a healthy dose of power and torque: 107 kW at 10,500 rpm and 104 Nm at 8,250 rpm. The bore per stroke is set at 75mm x 56.5mm with a compression ratio of 11.6:1. Redline starts at 11,500 rpm and rev limiter stops at 12,000 rpm. The PGM-FI settings are optimized for smooth power delivery and a strong response.

This engine is tuned to deliver its torque with a characteristic peak in the 6,000-8,000rpm range, where it excels significantly and offers an exciting and addictive driving experience.
