Mobility and accessibility issues are the second biggest concern in major cities, after citizen safety

Despite the different policies and measures for sustainable mobility, citizens prefer the car as a transport system for their main journeys. “There is no other mode of transport that combines the safety, comfort and payload of the car, it is said.

Road safety is the eighth concern of the inhabitants of large cities, behind the state of street cleaning and garbage collection, on a scale of the 10 main municipal problems addressed in a study conducted by Fesvial and Michelin.

However, according to the ranking of municipal issues in the Road Safety and Mobility Barometer 2022, mobility and accessibility issues are the second biggest concern in major cities, after citizen safety.

So,
citizen concern for road safety, it has been relegated to a place far away from the major local problems, as far as the main Spanish cities, on the contrary, it is concerned about the mobility in the city.

In its 2022 edition, this study has challenged the opinion and assessment of the population of the 10 main Spanish cities, in terms of population, on basic issues of road safety and mobility for citizens, such as the relevance of traffic, mobility and road safety within the major problems of your city, vehicle used regularly and in specific situations, position you in front of the car as a vehicle for use in the city.

This edition of the FESVIAL barometer also aims to make public the opinion of citizens about the municipality in which they live,
with regard to the risk of an accident on the roadthe level of education and awareness of the population in road safety, the condition of road signs, traffic lights, information signs or the quality of public transport.

Finally, the study also looked at the position of the inhabitants of large cities in the light of new mobility trends, their attitude towards new regulations and actions in the field of mobility and road safety in urban environments and attitudes towards new forms of mobility.

The results of the Barometer carried out on large cities show that, despite the fact that mobility in
a critical period of great change, the car remains the usual vehicle used by citizens to get around. Six out of ten people who live in large cities recognize that they use the car as their usual mode of transport.

According to the opinion of the citizens who participated in the Fesvial Safety and Mobility Barometer, the car is the most used means of transport for
trip to the hospital due to urgency (77.0%); traveling on weekends (76.3%); traveling on vacation (73.0%); travel for work (67.8%); go shopping (56.2%) and visit friends or family (56.0%)

However, the surveyed sample indicates that they use the car less to go to work or to the study center (38.8%), to the city center (26.7%) or to go out for a drink (27.5% ).

The surveyed population of
the big cities 43.5% said they were willing to use public transport to go to the city center for shopping, and 38.3% to walk during leisure trips. Citizens show very low acceptance of other mobility alternatives such as shared cars, with 8.2% using them only for weekend trips, or the motorbike or bicycle/scooter they mainly use to go to work or downtown. 3.7%, respectively.

Although the car is preferred for most journeys, it has some inconveniences and limitations for use in an urban environment (parking, access restrictions, etc.). However, the public thinks not
a means of transport that will disappearbecause it is still the best option for multiple situations (going to buy, medium and long distances, rainy days, commuting, etc.).

Even for a little more than half of the population surveyed, “there is no other means of transport that combines the safety, comfort and payload of the car”, in all its modes (private car, taxi, vtc, carpooling, etc.) .)

Pedestrians are less likely to have a traffic accident in urban environments than scooter users, cyclists or motorists, according to the citizens who participated in the Barometer.

The opinion about
ease of movement (movements in different types of vehicles, from one part of the city to another, etc.), the lighting, the condition of the roads, the parking garages, etc. is quite positive. Parking alone does not receive a positive rating, as 73% of those surveyed consider it average or poor.

Summarized,
the average rating given in the dimension «easy travel» is good, with 2.91 stars (on a scale from 0 to 5), despite the poor score obtained in the variable «parking» (46.2% very bad). The best rating is obtained for the “ease of moving around the city on a motorcycle”. (58.8% very good).
