All-weather tyres: features and benefits for driving in any season

Date:

Also known as ‘all season’, they make it possible to optimize the performance of passenger cars, vans, SUVs and SUVs in all weather conditions.

In autumn the weather changes
relatively fast, it is important to make sure the tires are good to ensure safety behind the wheel. “All Weather” tires are the guarantee of safety on the road, without having to know the weather forecast, because they guarantee grip on the asphalt in all conditions.

Moreover, in recent years
they have adapted to automotive innovations and are already available in most sizes needed for passenger cars, SUVs, 4x4s and vans,” he explains.
Jose Luis RodriguezCEO of AFANE, the Association of Tire Manufacturers.

From this association, they defend their use by understanding that they are more effective in cold and very cold temperatures. The “All Weather” are made with a softer and more flexible rubber compound, loaded with silica so it won’t cure below 7ºC. This can shorten the braking distance at low temperatures.

Thanks to
large number of slats on the studs, they work not only on dry asphalt and low temperatures, but also when the road is wet, when it rains or when there is snow or ice. They have better traction, grip and braking properties.

Also the drawing of the
rotation band more cut and deeper provides more water drainage and traction in difficult conditions. They guarantee mobility and safety throughout the winter season. Without the inconvenience of mounting and dismounting the chains, which also poses a risk of accidents when stopping on the shoulder.

Another advantage of this type of tire is that
allow to drive on highways with the presence of successive tunnels according to DGT Instruction 15/TV-88 (in which the use of chains is prohibited). The 3PMSF (3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake) symbol indicates that the tires are reliable and safe for driving on snow.

In countries with cold winters it is customary – and in many cases mandatory – to use different tires in the cold seasons and in warm winter and summer tyres. In Spain, sales of winter tires were reduced to just a few years ago
mountain areas and summer tires – what we know as ‘normal’ – were used all year round in most of the country.

All Season tires balance their performance in different weather conditions and allow us to travel to the coast in summer or to mountain areas in winter without chains. But the benefits are inferior to those of summer tires at high temperatures (dry and wet) and winter tires when the road is cold and slippery.

But all-season tires have less grip and take longer to stop the vehicle
in an emergency stop than summer tires at temperatures above ten degrees Celsius, both on dry and wet surfaces.

Below that temperature it is recommended to use
winter tireswhich perform much better on slippery surfaces than all-season tyres.
