The brand is committed to premium sports models with limited series of the RS3, R8, RSQ3 and even Audi TT to say goodbye to the petrol range, elevating the status and image of the brand
Audi is changing, in such a subtle way that we hardly realize it, but the brand that made it popular in Spain
the Audi A3 and the Audi A4 is only a few years away from removing the most popular models from the range and is now focusing on larger, sportier and also more expensive models, an unstoppable trend that is reflected in both the strategy and the models.
Like other brands, Audi has not yet decided what it will do with its petrol range as electrification progresses, what is certain is that
the Audi A1 and the SUV Q2 They will not continue despite their success and the A3 could be transformed into another electric car.
On the other hand, in the upper part, not only models do not disappear, but more are added every day, both in the combustion part and in the electric part. The new thing is that not all have ecology as their main banner, but many are committed to driving pleasure, and that is where Audi Sport steps in to adapt the best Audi and take it to another level.
The Audi Sport range has now been enriched with four limited series. Barely
we will spend time on the Audi TT Iconic Edition because it is a series that will not be sold in Spain, at least officially, although we could get it through parallel importers with great difficulty. In any case, it is a version with equipment changes on the 400 CV TTRS that we can buy. The five-cylinder engine is a marvel, as is the four-wheel drive and gearbox. This is certainly the most effective car equipped with this mechanism, one of the best five-cylinder cars in automotive history.
With the same great engine, Audi is committed to a model that is more in demand, such as
the Audi RSQ3 10th anniversarya series limited to 555 units that, without retouching the same 400 CV 2.5 turbocharged engine, adds 21-inch wheels and a specific color, as well as a maximum gift offered to customers for an additional ten thousand euros, figures that previously seemed high, but which today easier to sell because of the growth of the premium car market.
But the most interesting are undoubtedly the Audi R8 GT Performance Edition and the Audi RS3 Performance Edition 300, both with relevant technical changes that make them an object of desire.
for every enthusiast of sporty drivingand which go beyond the aesthetic or equipment details of the Audi TT or RSQ3 editions.
The R8 GT is the latest series of the second generation of the German sports car. Few know that this car is actually a Lamborghini Huracán with a ‘Hugo Boss’ suit instead of ‘Armani’ as both share mechanics, chassis, suspensions and even windshield.
The engine is none other than
the V10 5.0 of very high performance which was offered with 570 CV and rear-wheel drive or 620 CV with all-wheel drive. The new GT unites the most desirable ingredients, as it uses rear-wheel drive with the 620 hp engine. The most innovative is the look of the ‘Torque Rear’ system that allows you to control the rear differential for easier skidding.
Aesthetically this GT adds the carbon package that includes rear spoiler, diffuser,
Front splitter and side canards to better channel the air. The gearbox has shorter ratios to improve acceleration, so it goes to 100 in 3.4 seconds, the tires are forged. the brakes, carbon ceramics… all in a car that looks ready to compete in the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, for example.
We are not on the German circuit, but on Monteblanco, in Huelva, but the fog is so intense that the circuit needs time to open up the track, which is a bit damp. Three laps await us behind one of the Audi monitors
fully explore the possibilities of the car. Something we do conscientiously: the paddle touches are so direct that every gear change feels like a race, and the car brakes and corners with little inertia and much more speed. We don’t declutch all the controls, but we do put in the sport mode, which allows for more movement in the back that’s little hinted at, but gives character to the wheel.
Audi leaves us ‘alone’ for three laps. Without “chasing” the monitor of the brand, we find ourselves driving very good lines in a car that allows us to learn every step of driving
because of the security it can transmit. The price is 272,000 euros and there will only be one copy on the peninsula that already has an owner, so we are late again, time to review the other limited series.
The other model is the RS3
“Performance Edition”, a car that reaches 300 per hour and surpasses its rivals in the ‘pique’ that maintains German premiums to make the sportiest compact. Audi wants to be the fastest and has a new asset up its sleeve, the Drift mode.
The RS3 edition arrives with new wheels,
Pirelli semi slick tyres almost competition, new bucket seats and some extra details. 300 units will be sold to be split between the Sportback and sedan depending on markets. Ten copies of the five-door arrive in Spain with prices around one hundred thousand euros.
In circuit it proves that
has what it takes be a great sportsman. The engine roars like no other in its class, with a five-cylinder sound that thrills, and a brutal increase in revs, the change is quick and precise, dual-clutch seven-speed automatic type, and Pirelli steps into the ‘sticky’ an instant into the corners. It’s an excellent track car for those who don’t want to put their ‘supercar’ on the track regularly, but want a powerful car feeling to learn with.
Off the beaten track it is comfortableIt retains the rear seat, unusual in this type of trim, and all the usual safety and comfort features, in a dashboard that seems a bit gaudy to us.
We fully tested drift mode with it, with a new set of wheels at our disposal and,
despite Quattro drivethe RS3 always sends half its power to the rear axle, where two clutches, one per wheel, are responsible for endless slippage.
We don’t know if Audi will launch more petrol-powered RS, but if not, it’s a nice way to say goodbye to the sportier versions of the range, or, as the Germans would say, ‘Auf Wiedersehen’. We meet at the new generation of electric Audi RS…
