What are synthetic fuels and bio-alternatives for the battery?

Date:

Synthetic fuels are made from hydrogen and CO2 taken from the atmosphere

While the automotive sector is moving towards full electrification, there are other alternatives that can reduce or neutralize emissions from the mobile fleet. This is the case for synthetic fuels, which emit CO2, their production process would allow it to be reused and even completely neutralize its polluting footprint, which could save up to 2.8 gigatons of CO2 by 2050.

This is equivalent to three times the CO2 emissions produced by Germany in 2016, according to a study by Bosch, one of the leading manufacturers of auto parts and systems, which is preparing existing engines to adapt to these. future fuels.

According to the Spanish Association of Petroleum Product Operators (AOP) “from aircraft to tractors, via ships, private vehicles or trucks, the transportation of people and goods will require liquid fuels as the main source of energy for a long time to come.”

In this way, the target could be set to reduce the emission intensity of products manufactured in refineries by 80%. This solution not only uses an already existing infrastructure network (tank, logistics and distribution systems…), but can also be used in the vehicles already driving on our roads and will present a huge opportunity for industrial development for Spain.

Synthetic fuels are made from hydrogen and CO2 that are extracted from the atmosphere. Electricity from renewable sources is used for the preparation and by means of electrolysis the oxygen and hydrogen are separated from the water, creating renewable hydrogen. Energy companies and car manufacturers such as Porsche, Audi or Mazda defend this alternative. According to his calculations, the emissions of a thermal car can be reduced by up to 90% during operation, while at the same time avoiding the pollution caused by the production of a new vehicle and its battery.

Ecofuels are neutral liquid fuels or have low CO2 emissions produced by municipal, agricultural or forest waste, from plastic to used oil. They are not made with petroleum.

According to Carlos Martín, technical and environmental director of AOP, this organization has prepared a plan that includes the development of several technological routes for decarbonization.

The first point of the plan is based on energy efficiency, with the improvement of processes and energy management systems in the factories. It is a measure that the refineries are already applying and which can lead to a 17 to 22% reduction in CO2 emissions.

A second aspect is green hydrogen. The refining industry uses hydrogen (H2) for its industrial processes and “this route will replace it with green hydrogen produced from water with renewable electricity.” The goal for 2050 is to eliminate 100% of the CO2 released during hydrogen production.

European drivers don’t know they regularly use biodiesel

On the other hand, the capture, storage and use of CO2 is proposed. It is about absorbing the CO2 emitted by the industry for its storage or use, from the production of eco-fuels to raw materials for the chemical industry.

Finally, the production of Ecofuels is envisaged, with the gradual integration of low-carbon feedstocks into the refining system for the production of liquid fuels.

These can be synthetic fuels or “e-fuels” from captured CO2 and green H2; Advanced biofuels from raw materials of biological origin, usually waste (agricultural, forestry or industrial), and other low-carbon fuels from non-biological waste (plastic, municipal solid waste).
