Nissan completes the Juke range with the new hybrid version

Date:

With an output of 145 hp, the model reduces consumption by 20% compared to petrol

Japanese DNA, exciting electrification and technological excellence are three of the features presenting the hybrid version of the Nissan Juke. This is the motorization with which the brand completes its offer in Spain, including petrol and electric variants with powers from 114 to 143 hp.

The Juke Hybrid is right on top with its 145 hp, but at the same time achieves the DGT ECO label. Thus, this variant increases power by 25% compared to conventional gasoline and reduces consumption by 20%, almost a liter. For example, the Juke homologates petrol and 115 hp on average 6 l/100 km, while the hybrid, despite having 31 hp more, only achieves 5-5.2 l/100.

It is a consumption very close to what we achieved during the dynamic test of the model, on a route that combined urban sections, highways and mountain roads, between Barcelona and Sitges.

This contact with the model also served us to verify the smoothness of the operation of this mechanical combination, but above all the effectiveness of the new gear change, on which we will elaborate a few lines later.

This new hybrid engine, which has been slow to arrive in Spain due to the pandemic and the industrial and commercial impact of Covid-19, consists of a four-cylinder internal combustion block specially developed to work in a hybrid application.

It produces 94CV and maximum torque of 148Nm. It adds to the electrical equipment, which consists of a main engine producing 49 hp and 205 Nm of torque, combined with the 15 kW high voltage starter/generator, inverter and 1.2 kWh water-cooled battery.

Thanks to this combination, as long as there is enough battery, the car will start in electric mode. Once on the road, the electronics are responsible for selecting all possible combinations between the combustion engine and the electric, so that we can circulate only with gasoline, combine gasoline and electric, only electric, or use the combustion engine and the energy of braking and inertia to to charge the car batteries.

This combination is mated to an advanced, low-friction multi-mode gearbox that uses pressure clutches instead of conventional synchronization rings to shift the 4 ‘combustion’ and 2 ‘electric’ gears. To reduce friction, this gearbox also does not use a clutch. With this mixture of combustion and electric gears, it is possible to synchronize the gears, ensuring smooth, constant and immediate acceleration.

In the Juke Hybrid we have a selector switch for Eco/Normal/Sport driving mode. The drive mode not only changes the hardness of the steering, the operation of the climate control system and the response of the accelerator, but also changes the behavior of regenerative braking and the state of charge of the battery. In Sport mode, for example, the brake regeneration is set to a high level to maximize electrical power for effective acceleration. In Eco mode, it reduces the demand on the air conditioning system to maximize efficiency. We can travel about 3 kilometers in electric mode only.

Another innovation in a combustion engine car is the e-pedal, similar to the pedal mounted on the electric Nissan Leaf, but with a special feature. Called e-Pedal Step on the Juke, this system allows you to control the movement of the car solely with the accelerator pedal. When the foot is removed from the accelerator pedal, moderate braking is applied until the car comes to a near stop, up to 5 km/h. the use of this e-Pedal is very intuitive and it is especially welcome in the city, where we practically do not need to touch the brake pedal, except to come to a complete stop.

Aesthetically, the Juke Hybrid has some differences from the petrol variant. For example, on the outside, in addition to the Hybrid logos, we find a mesh grille at the front with a smaller opening to optimize aerodynamics.

Changes have also been made to the bodywork under the bumper to improve airflow, and a hatch has been added to the radiator grille, which allows the airflow to be automatically adjusted according to cooling needs, reducing drag. The rear spoiler above the tailgate is profiled to generate a cleaner airflow behind the car. all these adjustments save about 2 g of CO2 per 100 km.

In addition, new 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels are introduced in the range, as well as other 19-inch two-tone wheels derived from those of the Nissan Ariya.

Engine: Hybrid 143 hp

Other versions: 114 hp petrol

Consumption: from 5 l/100 km

Length/width (height (in meters): 4.21/1.80/1.59

Trunk: 354-1,233 liters

Price: from €31,350

Range price: Petrol from € 25,050

Inside, the instrument panel also reflects certain changes resulting from the car’s hybridization. For example, the right clock shows speed and the left a power meter, the needle moving between «Charging», when energy is regenerated, «Eco» when the propulsion is electric, and «Power» when the combustion engine and electric motor are combined. On the bottom of the left watch is an indicator that shows the battery charge status.

A visual representation of the power flow can be displayed on the 7-inch screen located between the two clocks on the instrument panel. The e-Pedal system activation button is located on the center console, behind the electric parking brake button, while the 100% electric mode activation button is located between the central vents.

Due to the need to accommodate the new battery, the boot space is 354 liters compared to 422 for the petrol-only version. If we fold down the rear seats, the cargo space increases to 1,237 litres.

The habitability of the car is very good, despite being a small vehicle, from the B-SUV segment. As for the Juke with the 1.0 DIG-T engine of a similar trim level, the Hybrid is 3,200 euros more expensive, since the starting price of this hybrid variant starts at 31,350 euros, without applying any discount or Moves plan.
