Minivans still resist the trend of SUVs

Date:

Due to their practicality, modularity and consumption, family cars are resistant to disappearance and even interesting novelties are on the way

It was in 2016 when minibus-type cars
enjoyed their greatest popularity, accounting for 26% of the share, with 394,021 units out of a total of 1,499,000 passenger cars sold. Its capacity to accommodate adults and children in five or up to seven individual seats, an easily accessible trunk with sufficient volume for the belongings of all passengers, the economical diesel mechanics with low consumption and correct performance made them an object of desire.

But fashion is fleeting, and the country style of SUVs has prevailed to this day. For example, sales in 2019 were reduced to 94,874 in a market of 1,302,963, or 7.28%. Since then, there has been a loyal audience, as of this year so far, and despite the special circumstances caused by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, 3,795 units have been sold out of a total passenger car sales figure of around 308,000. Even in recent months we have been able to see how
some brands returned to bet on this type of format

The main reason is that many of those who once found their way to the so-called crossovers are now returning to minibuses convinced of their potential to transport the whole family, leaving aesthetic considerations aside. It is true that it is currently difficult to find a diesel offer, which has gradually moved towards petrol hybridization, but the main manufacturers have enough products in their catalog to answer customers who buy a car more with their head than with the heart.

Although this statement may not be 100% true, because the electric Volkswagen ID.Buzz stands out among the latest developments, a tribute to the iconic Bulli, in which the design factor plays a very important role. The Hyundai Staria is also not lacking in design, although the Korean car uses a diesel engine in this case. The arrival of hybrid or plug-in hybrid versions is not excluded.

From China comes the third major novelty in the segment, the Maxus Euniq 5, with seven seats and in a 100% electric format, with 365 km of autonomy, making it a good urban tool for large families. Another novelty is the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, also renewed this year. Although it fits into the conventional compact segment due to its dimensions, its architecture and capabilities make it one of the medium-sized vehicles for five people with greater interior capacity, but without giving up its youthful and even sporty appearance. It is a segment in which veteran models remain, some with a lifespan of more than 7 years for their current generation, but which have been able to update themselves technologically and mechanically. It is the example of the Seat Alhambra, which has been on the market since 2015.

Another veteran model, which stood out for its good value for money and excellent fuel economy, was the Citroën C4 Spacetourer, which is no longer produced at the Vigo factory. The Stellantis group has also decided to leave only its commercial derivatives in electric versions, such as the Berlingo, Spacetourer, Peugeot Rifter and Traveller, and Opel Combo and Zafira. In variants like this, however, we must welcome the Ford Tourneo Connect, which shares elements with the Volkswagen Caddy in its 2022 generation. With petrol and diesel versions. Despite its commercial origin, these are very well adapted vehicles for family outings.
