Honda presents its new Civic Type R, possibly the last

Date:

The Type R will go on sale next year, with first deliveries to customers in Europe in early 2023.

Honda has unveiled the new Civic Type R to coincide with the celebration of 25 years of the brand’s iconic high-performance hatchback and 50 years of Civic. The new Type R is designed to deliver the experience
most exciting of this model so far. To do this, Honda has built on the long tradition of high-performance cars, inspired by its racing spirit.

Available in
Europe early 2023, Honda engineers refined every aspect of the new model, including design improvements that optimize aerodynamic performance. Drivetrain optimizations and lightweight components have resulted in the most powerful and responsive Type R ever.

Developed under the ‘Ultimate Sport 2.0’ concept, the design of the new Type R is based on the sleek and sporty silhouette of the recently introduced Honda Civic e:HEV. To enhance the sporty appearance and take dynamic performance to the next level, the Type R’s appearance is now visibly lower and wider. Its presence is enhanced by flared wheel arches on lightweight 19-inch matte black alloy wheels and custom Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

The exterior design now conveys a strong sense of unity, thanks to elements such as the front and rear bumpers, as well as beautifully integrated design features such as the rear doors and wheel arches, which were developed exclusively for the Type R and which benefit aerodynamics. The larger and lower front bumper grille maximizes airflow to the engine and blends seamlessly with the discreet new hood, which now features a vent, also to maximize airflow around the bumper.

Other design details that help optimize aerodynamics include side spoilers behind the front wheels and a larger rear diffuser integrated into the underbody and designed to perfectly match the bodywork above.

The dramatic design of this new rear spoiler further contributes to the generation of downforce and the angle has been moved back to eliminate drag. The rear spoiler, with new die-cast aluminum brackets, is positioned lower but wider than the previous model, accentuating the sleek new roofline and wider stance.

The interior of the new model is aimed at stimulating driving pleasure and sharpening concentration. It maintains the high level of comfort, functionality and refinement of the new Civic e:HEV, enhanced with exciting, performance-oriented details and features such as the iconic classic red trim of the Type R.

The immersive cabin is designed to contribute to an intense driving experience: the driver sits in a lower driving position than before, with better visibility from the now lower bonnet, blind spots have been minimized and reflective elements have been reduced. Sporty, lightweight front seats with suede-effect upholstery provide exceptional support for the driver’s posture for comfort and agility on the track and over long distances.

In terms of performance, the driver can seamlessly switch between performance settings and select different modes for the engine, steering, suspension and engine sound. In addition to the predefined Comfort, Sport and +R modes, there is now also the new Individual mode, which has been added to provide a personalized driving experience.

The powerful Honda LogR data logging app has been reintroduced, with a completely updated format for this generation Type R, so that it now combines performance data collected by on-board sensors with a smartphone app that helps the driver monitor and record of different measurements live. Key features include a stopwatch to record lap times, a 3D circular motion graph that indicates the maximum friction that the vehicle’s tires can reach, an innovative scoring function that helps the driver improve his driving technique, track handling and many other driver interaction features that deliver safer, more precise and faster laps around the track.

It also features a redesigned high-efficiency exhaust system to improve the power-to-weight ratio, torque and top speed of the previous-generation Type R, making the 2023 Civic Type R one of the most powerful cars in the world. per liter in its category.

Also, the updated Brembo braking system retains the previous generation two-piece discs for better feel and longer life. The new vehicle has improved temperature control thanks to a new radiator that ensures optimum sustainable performance during continuous use. A new triple exhaust design with optimized sound modulation provides a better acoustic sensation, further strengthening the connection between driver and car.
