The new Lamborghini Urus has set a new record in the production SUV category on the track

Prior to its premiere in mid-August, the new Lamborghini Urus has just set a new record in the production SUV category on the track used for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the famous mountain race that recently celebrated its 100th edition.

Hillclimb champion and Pirelli test driver Simone Faggioli, holder of the rear-wheel drive record at the 2018 ‘Race to the Clouds’ at Pikes Peak Colorado, was tasked with driving the new Urus, complete with camouflage livery, before it was officially presented. The stopwatch attack took place on the same route as the race, with the road being closed to traffic for the occasion. From a height of 2,862 meters, Faggioli took the 156 corners over 20 km (12.42 miles) in length, an additional height of 1,439 meters at an average gradient of 7% and the finish at 4,302 meters in 10:32,064.

The new Urus, which has not yet been officially launched, did not participate in the race, but the time was recorded by the official Pikes Peak International Hillclimb timekeepers, beating the previous 2018 Bentley Bentayga time of 10:49.902.

“The decision to put ourselves to the test at Pikes Peak reflects Lamborghini’s spirit of ‘expecting the unexpected’ and demonstrates the extraordinary performance of the new Urus; which will be presented shortly,” said Rouven Mohr, technical director of Automobili Lamborghini. “Pikes Peak is the most famous mountaineering event in the world, but also an extreme challenge for the car: the uneven layout of its route puts the balance of the chassis to the test; significant height differences strain the booster; and the weather conditions can change very quickly between the start and the finish.”

Fitted with a V8 biturbo engine as standard, the Urus has been modified to meet Pikes Peak International Hillclimb safety regulations: the passenger compartment is fitted with a safety cell; the standard seats have been replaced by a racing seat with a six-point belt; and a fire suppression system is installed.

The tires (with dimensions of 285/40 R22 and 325/35 R22) are an evolution of the Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R of the Urus: for the first time, the Pirelli semi-slick tire has been developed to meet the characteristics of an SUV , with this particular version developed in collaboration with Lamborghini.

The result of this collaboration is a tire with greater versatility, offering high performance both on dry asphalt with high ambient temperatures and on wet surfaces with colder temperatures.
