In July 2022, the European Union imported significantly more sunflower seeds than in the same month last year. The Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (UFOP) announced that the amount has increased from approximately 14,000 tons to approximately 260,000. The main supplier was Ukraine, with a market share of 93 percent.
According to the figures, the import of rapeseed has also increased considerably. In July 2021, almost 287,000 tons were supplied from third countries, compared to a good 491,400 tons in the same month of this year.
Australia has the largest share
Australia has the largest share with about 78 percent. Ukraine followed by about ten percent and decreased its market share by only 2 percentage points compared to the same period last year.
Foreign trade in rapeseed and sunflower seeds has changed, but not as much as expected, the trade association said. Ukraine is considered to be the main supplier of oilseeds, oilseeds and especially sunflower oil.
No drop in supplies due to Ukraine war
Due to the Russian war against Ukraine, a significantly limited export was expected. According to the association, current data shows that larger quantities came from Ukraine than predicted: “Therefore, it cannot be said that there has been a general drop in deliveries.”
However, according to the association, European sunflower oil imports have fallen, albeit not as much as feared. In July 2022, the EU received only about 126,000 tons, compared to about 137,000 tons in the same month last year.
