Now it’s resolved. From January 1, 2023, there will be an “adjustment of the rates for water supply, sewage and waste disposal and parking meters, as well as for selected rights of use for the use of public municipal land,” according to the City of Vienna. . According to Alderman for Finance Peter Hanke (SPÖ), one can be confident “that the extra fees are clearly value for money and well invested”.
Halfway through the year, we looked at whether the consumer price index (CPI) had risen by three percent or more since the last increase. The adjustment will take effect in early 2023.
According to the town hall, the CPI has increased by 5.9 percent since the last rate increase (early 2022, note) for water supply and sanitation and waste processing. For the parking meter rate, which was last adjusted in 2020, the value is 12.2 percent.
According to Hanke, the charges would be invested in modernizing and improving the service quality of Vienna’s public services and infrastructure. “The valorization of the fees ensures the high level of quality of services of general interest that the Viennese have been accustomed to for decades,” said the alderman for Finance and Economy via broadcast. “We will continue to be the cleanest city in Europe, with the best mountain spring water and the most modern sewage system.”
2.90 euros more per month for water and waste
Municipal taxes would be invested in modernizing and improving the service quality of Vienna’s public services and infrastructure, it was alleged. You won’t take more than you need, you assure me. On the contrary: the average level of cost recovery for Vienna’s tariffs in 2021 was only 41.18 percent, the rest was covered with about 750 million euros from the city budget.
According to the town hall, the valorisation means a monthly compensation adjustment of about 2.90 euros for a model multi-person household – which corresponds to three people or a small family – for the water supply or sewage and waste processing. For a model of a single-person household, that is about 1.30 euros, calculated.
One hour of parking for 2.50 euros
With the adjustment of the parking meter rate as of 1 January, a parking ticket for half an hour costs 1.25 euros and a parking ticket for an hour costs 2.50 euros. The values here are currently between EUR 1.10 and EUR 2.20. The price for the special permit for residents (“Parkpickerl”) is not regulated by the Valorisation Act, nothing changes here. According to the municipality, the proceeds of the parking fee are earmarked and go to public transport, road safety and bicycles.
Despite the current valorisation, Vienna is said to be in the lower third of the federal states in terms of waste and sewer charges. When it comes to water taxes, Vienna is the fourth cheapest federal state in Austria.
