The earth shook Sunday morning on the Italian island of Sicily. Authorities recorded the natural event with a magnitude of 4.2 at a depth of about four kilometers inland around the municipality of Giuliana, about 80 kilometers by car south of the island’s capital, Palermo, according to civil defense.
People in the affected region of the popular holiday island are said to have noticed the earthquake. There were no reports of damage or injuries on Sunday morning. However, the fire service dispatched a helicopter to assess the situation from the air.
There are always earthquakes in the Mediterranean around Italy, on the islands and on the mainland, although they are often so weak that people don’t even notice them. However, there have been devastating earthquakes in the past, such as in 2016 in Amatrice in central Italy and the surrounding area, which killed about 300 people.
