According to a media report, a US court has ordered the car manufacturer Ford Motors to pay $1.7 billion (1.69 billion euros) after a fatal accident. “A compensation order, hopefully to warn the people driving the millions of trucks Ford has sold,” said the lawyer for the family of a couple who died in the 2014 accident.
Ford is accused of not having sufficiently reinforced the roof of the model F-250 pickup truck to protect occupants in a rollover accident.
According to the report, prosecutors’ lawyers had presented evidence of nearly 80 similar accidents in which passengers were injured or died as a result of the roof structure. Ford did not immediately respond to a request from Reuters for comment.
