In southern France, a new forest fire has destroyed at least 700 hectares of forest. More than 3,000 villagers and holidaymakers were brought to safety from the flames in the department of Aveyron on Tuesday, authorities said. In the village of Mostuéjouls in the Cévennes National Park, a campsite had to be evacuated, among other things.
The fire broke out on Monday evening in Massegros in the neighboring department of Lozère and, fanned by wind and drought, quickly moved towards Mostuéjouls. The fire brigade was deployed with 600 firefighters and several fire-fighting aircraft.
Controlled fires halted the spread of the fire on Tuesday. The fire is believed to have been caused by flying sparks from a tractor. The driver immediately alerted the fire brigade and tried to extinguish the flames himself.
Already 47,000 hectares of forest destroyed
In France, forest fires have already destroyed more than 47,000 hectares of land this year. July was the worst month yet, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis).
