Cow attack in Tyrol – group on Alm “overwhelmed”, have to pay for use

Date:

The operation by the mountain rescue service, fire brigade and alpine police lasted until late into the night, with 44 students and teachers having to be taken from the mountain from Sunday to Monday in Tyrol after an alleged attack with cows. The group from the US fled from the alpine animals and lost their orientation in the dark. The rescuers met hikers who were completely overwhelmed and now have to pay for their work.

This mountain adventure will remain in the memory of those affected forever. Quite late, around 4 pm, the 40 students between the ages of eight and 18 and four teachers left on Sunday afternoon. The American group “gondolas” with the cable car in the Axamer Lizum to the so-called Hoadl, and from there to walk over the Widdersberg to the Halsl.

Then the shock: “In the vicinity of Halsl, the group was suddenly attacked by several cows. The students and teachers then fled up the mountain in the direction of the Nockspitze”, according to the police. It is still unclear why and how the alleged attack came about.

Operation was orderly
What is clear is that the group has completely lost its way. Also because of the falling darkness. Late in the evening, the teachers didn’t know what else to do and called an emergency call. “We were alerted around 11 p.m. and joined the group,” a spokesman for the Axams mountain rescue service said in an interview with Krone.

Emergency services had warm clothes, blankets and hot drinks in their luggage. “The group was completely overwhelmed and difficult to understand at the beginning,” the spokesperson emphasizes.

“Not a cow far during the operation”
But in the end, the operation was “orderly and disciplined”. The 44 Americans were taken to nearby Birgitzalm, handed over to the volunteer fire brigades in Axams and Grinzen and the Alpine Police, and returned to their accommodation. All were unharmed, but slightly hypothermic.

The 15 emergency services were needed for up to three hours. According to the spokesperson, “at least we didn’t see a cow in the distance during the entire operation”. The costs are passed on to the group.
