A rare and fascinating weather phenomenon was observed Sunday in southern China’s Hainan province. An eyewitness filmed a rainbow-colored pileus cloud (see time-lapse video above).
The iridescent cloud type, which changes in appearance quite quickly, usually lies like a cap over cumulus clouds (often also called cumulus or cumulus clouds, note), from which it is often pierced.
Pileus clouds form when the air at the top of the cumulus cloud is very humid and is lifted by the cloud as it continues to swell. They can be seen as precursors of a transformation from hope clouds to cumulonimbus clouds (storm clouds, NB) and thus signal possible shower formation.
