According to his own statements, Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny has been transferred to an isolation cell in the Russian penal camp. The sentence is officially justified by the fact that, contrary to an order, he did not keep his hands behind his back for three seconds as he walked through the camp, according to a post Navalny posted on Twitter on Wednesday. The 46-year-old suspects political intimidation by the Moscow leadership.
Navalny recently angered prison authorities by forming a prisoners’ union. According to his own statements, he had to spend three days in the small 2.5 by 3 meter cell last week – allegedly for not buttoning a button properly.
“I must learn to meditate”
This time he lasts for five days. “Here I am again in my infernal closet with a cup and a book,” wrote President Vladimir Putin’s prominent opponent. “Of course it’s a bit boring. I think I need to learn to meditate.”
Due to alleged fraud, Navalny is in penal colony 6 in Melekhovo, about 260 kilometers northeast of Moscow – under particularly harsh prison conditions.
In May, a court upheld the nine-year sentence. He is internationally regarded as a political prisoner. Navalny had recovered from a poison attack in Germany in August 2020, but then voluntarily returned to Russia.
